Thatching was done with straw, reeds or rushes and the thatch was held down with rods called scallops. The scallop was a twisted length of sally or hazel pointed at each end and used to secure the thatch to the roof. Some thatcher’s used simple techniques while others were more imaginative and had more decorative and ornate work.
