Liscannor, a beautiful fishing village derives its name from the Irish “Lios Ceannuir” meaning O’Connor’s fort. A ruined castle which was once the O’Connor stronghold lies above the village. It is also famous as the birthplace of John P. Holland (1841), the inventor of the submarine. A plaque commemorating his career can be seen down at the harbour.
