The Irish Wolfhound is the oldest Irish dog breed, established in mythology by 1st century AD. Setanta, an Irish hero, earned the name ‘Cú Chulainn’ (‘hound of Culann’) after killing Culann’s Irish Wolfhound in self-defence. They were saved from extinction by the revival in breeding with the growth in Irish nationalism in the late 19th Century. The Irish Wolfhound is seen as a living symbol of Irish culture and Ireland’s Celtic origins.
